Model: X1 9. A half-century after its debut, the Fiat X1/9 (later known as the Bertone X1/9) remains a benchmark for sophisticated sports car design in an affordable package. At launch, the Italian two-seater instantly made everything else in its price range look a decade out of date. The popularity of this mid-engine wedge helped it remain in.

The X1/9 was initially intended to replace the Fiat 850 Spider, another Bertone-designed car. However, it coexisted with the larger and pricier Fiat 124 Sport Spider throughout most of its production life. Several model changes and updates occurred during the X1/9's production run. It started with a 1.3-liter engine and a 4-speed manual.

Fiat pulled out of the American market that year, but the car was imported and marketed by International Automobile Importers until 1987 as the Bertone X1/9. This company was run by Malcolm Bricklin. Fiat X1/9 Buying Guide Including The Bertone X1/9

Styled by the Italian design house Bertone, the X1/9 was a two seat sports car with a mid mounted inline four engine. In breaking with Fiat tradition at the time, the X1/9 was named after its prototype code. with X1 meaning passenger car, and 9 meaning ninth car produced under the naming system.

The 1974-82 Fiat X1/9 sports a wedge shape and mid-engine design, two characteristics that are oh-so Italian. In fact, the X1/9 is the only mid-engine Italian sports car this side of the big-money exotics—and that's the beginning and the end of the comparisons. Never will the words "X1/9" and "big-money exotics" be used in the same sentence again.

The X1/9's unassisted steering is sublime: light, linear, quick to turn in, and with just the right level of feedback through its 165/70x13 tyres. Front-end grip is tenacious, and it takes heroic attempts to even approach mild understeer in the dry. The later 1500 switched to a quarterlight-mounted mirror.

Fiat bought into this new sports car concept and launched the X1/9 as its own in late 1972. The project name survived as the production moniker because, although the X1/9 was notionally part of the 128 series, it was mid-engined and didn't fit with Fiat's naming policy of the time. None of this mattered to Bertone as it was happy to have.
